A charming small Alsace village nestling in the middle of the vineyards beneath the Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle (the site most visited in France after Versailles and the Mont Saint Michel). Founded at the end of the 8th century by Fulrad, the Abbot of Saint Denis and Arch-chaplain of Charlemagne, the village of Saint Hippolyte was until 1766 an enclave of the Lorraine Dukes in Alsace.
With its typical flowery half-timbered houses and medieval ramparts, Saint-Hippolyte is particularly famed for its “Le Rouge de Saint-Hippolyte” grape variety, ripened in the sun of the surrounding hills, which you can taste at the local Grape Producers while you stroll through the streets of this peaceful village.
